There are a lot of designs of lift trucks which are able to satisfy the load and product requirements. However, there are other trucks that are highly specialized to perform certain functions. These trucks include the articulated counterbalance trucks, guided very narrow aisle trucks, explosion proof trucks and automated forklift trucks. To know the advantages and disadvantages of using these trucks, here is a brief description of each type.

The articulated counterbalance trucks offer a front wheel steer and a hybrid VNA truck. It is basically designed for the offloading of trailers and placing loads in narrow aisle racking. These trucks are able to compete with the guided very narrow aisle trucks in terms of lift heights, pallet storage density, and pallet throughput. The very narrow aisle VNA trucks require a very flat surface because there are rails or wires that guide the vehicle. This type of specialty trucks has two forms:  the man-down and man-riser. This truck allows the elevation of the operator with the load to increase visibility and to allow multilevel order picking in break bulk.

As the name implies, explosion proof trucks or pyroban trucks can withstand extreme temperatures and explosions. This type of truck is very suitable in fields or atmospheres that handle flammable material. These industries include pharmaceuticals, logistics, petroleum industries, food and drink, chemical, and many others. For this type of trucks, they have to carry a designation for the type of fuel they are using. GS should be displayed for a gasoline powered truck, LPS for liquid propane, DS for diesel power and GS/LPS for a dual gasoline/liquefied propane fueled truck.

Things to Consider when Choosing Lift Trucks

We all know that lift trucks or forklifts are very functional and beneficial vehicles when it comes to the transportation of materials most especially in warehouses and manufacturing centers. When choosing a lift truck to use, there are some things that you need to consider first.

The most important thing for you to do is you must first know the maximum weight and dimensions of the products or loads that you will be transporting. You should also be informed of the maximum fork height required to stack or rack your materials. Knowing the size and weight of your load, as well as the lift height, is very important because it affects the lift capacity of your truck. A larger or heavier load will definitely reduce the lift height and the lift capacity of the truck.

You must also decide what type of functionality you want for your truck. If you want to use them outdoors, indoors, or both, you have to get the necessary attachments in order to achieve the type of functionality and truck capacity that you desire. Each lift truck comes with a placard that provides information on its rated capacities. If there are changes made in the truck such as the addition or removal of attachments, the placard should be replaced in order to show the correct or updated capacities.

When choosing a lift truck, the bigger truck is not always the better choice. It depends on the capacity of the truck when choosing a vehicle. Usually, the higher the capacity, the larger is its truck size and the larger is the required aisles. You must also consider what tire to use in your lift truck: cushion tires or pneumatic tires. If you intend to use your truck indoors, cushion tires would be a better choice. But if you want to use your truck outdoors most especially on uneven and loose surfaces, the pneumatic tires would be the correct choice.

The Attachments Intended for Lift Trucks

Lift trucks are very convenient in the transportation of materials in warehousing and manufacturing facilities. To be able to perform more functions, attachments and options are made available for lift trucks. Take note that when placing new attachments, they should be approved by the manufacturer of the truck itself. This is to ensure that the attachment being mounted will not damage the truck. To give you an idea, here are some of the most common attachments for lift trucks.

The most common attachment, which should be regarded as standard equipment, is the side shift. This device will allow the fork carriage to slide in both the left and right directions in order to place a load or material more accurately to the desired area. This is highly beneficial because it reduces the possibility for product damage and it gives the operator a more flexible option in placing loads.

If you are performing high volume operations or operations which involve a wide variety of pallet and crate sizes, having a fork positioned is greatly suggested. This feature allows the operator to adjust the fork distance without the need to get off the truck. When you are dumping or transporting specially designed hoppers, having a fork pivot is an advantage. This device permits the rotation of the forks and carriage for a more flexible operation.

The height selector is another attachment typically intended for reach trucks working at 20 feet and above. This option allows the presetting of fork heights so as to correspond with the different rack levels. If you want to pick up longer loads, you must have fork extensions. On the other hand, if you are transporting carpet rolls, rolled steel, or wire and cable spools, you should have a prong attachment. This is a device which allows you to pick up rolled materials.

Types of Fuel for Lift Trucks

Lift trucks are basically used in the transportation of materials from one place to another. These are very beneficial for warehousing facilities as well as manufacturing industries because it makes it easier for them to transport and store their materials and products. To be able to use these trucks you have to select the type of fuel that you want to use or the one that suits your purpose.

The different fuel types include electric, AC or DC power, regenerative braking, fast charging, liquid propane LP, gasoline, or diesel. Electric vehicles provide a quiet operation and they do not release fumes. This is the type of fuel that suits truck lifts used indoors. If you want to perform multi-shift operations, you have to add batteries as well as charging or transfer stations.

The AC or DC powered lift trucks provide a faster acceleration as well as a higher work efficiency and lower maintenance cost. The DC batteries used in trucks give off DC power which is converted to AC to supply power to the motor. In regenerative braking, the batteries are recharged with the use of the momentum of the lift truck when braking or slowing down. Since lift trucks usually start and stop all the time, this is a great fuel option.

Fast charging is growing more popular over the days because it does not require you to change the batteries of the truck more often. In this principle, the batteries are quickly recharged during breaks, shifts and lunches. This type of fueling is more costly than the usual charging systems but it is more preferred by many.

There is also the use of LP or liquid propane in lift trucks. The advantages of using this fuel include the release of minimal fumes and the ability to change the LP tanks quickly. It can also be used for both indoor and outdoor functions. Lastly, the gasoline or diesel powered truck is only used in outdoor functions such as heavy construction and scrap yards.

Different Types and Functionalities of Lift Trucks

Lift trucks or forklifts are powered industrial trucks which are used to lift or transport materials. Basically, this truck is a very convenient for transporting goods in the warehousing and manufacturing industry. There are a lot of different types of lift trucks.  These include standard forklifts, reach trucks, motorized pallet trucks, order selectors, and other VNA pallet handling vehicles.

The standard forklift, also referred to as a counterbalanced sit-down lift truck, is usually used for lift height under 20 feet. You can use this truck with any of the fuel and tire types. It can also serve a variety of weight capacities like the 3000 lb – 4000 lb truck which is usually the most commonly used truck in warehouse facilities. You can also use the different attachments like fork shifts, side shifts, slip sheet attachments, and hydraulic clamps with it.

The reach truck is another type of lift truck which is especially designed for racking purposes and not for quickly moving loads in short distances. This is a narrow aisle 8’ – 10’ truck which contains outriggers in the front region and telescoping forks that utilizes a hydraulic scissors type of mechanism. This mechanism will allow you to pick up the desired load and retract it over the outriggers located in front. You can use this kind of truck if you want to achieve a lift height of up to 40 feet.

Another type of lift truck is the motorized pallet truck which is specifically designed for allowing the operator to walk along with the truck as it moves loads.  The rider has a small sized platform where they stand. This kind of truck can easily be navigated and is great for moving loads over extended distances in warehouse facilities and manufacturing industries. However, there are some safety issues with this truck because there is no operator cage.
